African Chamomile essential oil - Eriocephalus punctulatus - South Africa
Known for its striking blue colour, African (or Cape) chamomile can be used as an alternative to Roman chamomile. It is a shrub that grows in the mountains of the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
Traditionally it was used as a medicine to encourage pleasant dreams and was burned to drive away evil spirits.
African chamomile essential oil is extracted from the flowers of the plant using steam distillation.
African chamomile essential oil is anti-inflammatory. It helps relieve muscle and joint pain while also helping to relieve irritants on the skin. This includes cuts, wounds, abscesses, insect bites, sunburn, acne, rashes and eczema.
Mentally and emotionally, African chamomile oil helps to soothe the user. It instils a feeling of wellbeing and relaxation and helps fight depression and relieve anxiety and stress. It also calms down an over-stimulated mind and aids in restful sleep.
It can be applied topically to the skin in either directly or in a diluted form.
