African worm wood, also known as wilde-als by the Afrikaans community, is native to South Africa and grows form the Cederberg Mountains in the Cape, to as far north as Ethiopia.
African wormwood essential oil is extracted from the leaves of the plant, using steam distillation. The harvest time of the African wormwood plant starts in mid-March, when the flowers are just starting to form, and lasts until the end of May.
African wormwood essential oil can be used as a local anaesthetic, helping to relieve pain caused by rheumatism, neuralgia, and arthritis. When inhaled or added to a hot bath, it can help relieve other pains, such as headaches and menstrual pain.
This essential oil is also antibacterial and antimicrobial, killing harmful bacteria and microbes in the body. This helps prevent infections, both internally and externally. It can also be used to reduce fever caused by infections.
