Greater Celandine Chelidonium majus L.
Greater Celandine is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Papaveraceae family. The rootstock is multi-colored, brownish outside, yellow on the inside, slightly branched. The stem is leaning or erect, at its upper part branched, usually barely 80 cm high. The leaves are soft, uneven and cut. The basal leaves are relatively large with long stems, and the stems are smaller, with short handles. The top leaves are almost seated. Flowers are collected 4-5 in inflorescences. The seeds are numerous, small with a ridge appendage. In case of injury the plant produces orange-yellow milk juice. Blooms in May - June.
In Bulgaria, it is situated in damp shady places in the forests, around the dwellings, the gardens and the abandoned places, without the seaside.
In use herbs (Herba Chelidonii). Picking up May, until September can be picked a second crop. The entire overhead part of the plant is assembled during the buttoning. Then it contains most alkaloids. Cut the stem 2-3 cm above the ground. Dried straw with snake milk consists of stems with leaves, flowers, and here berries in different stages of development. The smell is characteristic, slightly narcotic, irritating, and the taste is bitter.
In medicine, it is used for the production of painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, in skin diseases, for the treatment of warts, in the treatment of skin tuberculosis.
