Lemon balm essential oil, also known as Melissa essential oil, comes from the Melissa Officinalis plant, more commonly known as lemon balm and is part of the mint family. Lemon balm is native to the Mediterranean region. It has small, hairy leaves and small pale pink flowers that are very attractive to bees, hence the name Melissa, which in Greek means “honeybee”.
Lemon balm oil is extracted form the flowers, leaves and stems of the plant through a steam distillation process. It takes three tons of lemon balm plant material to make 450 grams of this essential oil, making it one of the most expensive essential oils available.
