Shepherd’s purse Capsella bursa pastoris (L.) Medic.
The Shepherd’s purse is a one-year or two-year herbaceous plant of the Cruciferae family. The stem is simple and branched, thin and high up to 40 cm, bare or soft and fibrous in its lower part. The base leaves are collected in a rosette. Sometimes the rosette is missing. The stem leaves are smaller, oblong, often rounding the stem. The flowers are small, collected in clusters of racemose. The seeds are pale brown and numerous. Blooms during the warmer weather of all annual seasons.
In Bulgaria Shepherd’s purse occurs as a weed and storm in the grassy places, meadows, crops, shrubs.
The herbs (Herba Bursae pastoris) are used. Picking up May - September. Collect the entire overlayed part during flowering along with the first green fruit, cutting the stem to 25cm. from the top, and rosette leaves are added to the collected.
Contains tyramine, choline, tanning substances, alkaloid bursin, ascorbic acid vit. K and others.
In medicine, it is used to lower arterial pressure, strengthen abdominal cavities and constriction of peripheral blood vessels. The blood-spiraling action of the herb is due to the presence of vitamin K. The young leaves are rich in vit. C and can be used for salad.
